Group Discussions are conducted by almost all companies and colleges while selecting students today. The importance of Group discussions today is such that the students often go for classes or tuitions to be able to do well at their group discussions. A group discussion simply offers a platform for students from different backgrounds to come together and present their views or opinions on the same topic. The Group discussions are conducted by companies while they go about recruiting students and they are also conducted by MBA colleges and other graduate as well as postgraduate colleges as a part of their admission procedures. The group discussions are often conducted after the written round. And they also act as a precursor to the personal interviews.
There are many types of group discussions that can be conducted. They can be broadly classified into the following categories viz the factual group discussions, the debatable or the controversial group discussions, the abstract group discussions or the case studies as group discussions. In other variants of group discussions, role play may also be used. In this format the participants of the group discussions are required to stick to a specific role during the Group Discussions.
There is a difference between Group discussions and Debates but they are many students who go about both of them thinking that both of them are the same and that they need to be talking in a similar manner at both of them. But this is a common misconception. Debates are generally conducted among two groups of two to three students each. In a debate, the groups are already given their stand regarding their topic and they are required to defend their stand by coming up with points and contradicting their opponents. In a debate, the atmosphere often turns violent and the two teams become quiet aggressive about defending their stand. But a Group discussion is completely different. There is a thin line in being assertive and aggressive and that should not be crossed by the students. In a group discussion, the students may choose their stand or may not really choose a stand but give points for both the possible stands. Also there is no need to prove the point that you have made and make the others confer with what you say.
The group discussions are increasingly being used in order to be able to select the students for it offers the companies and the colleges to be able to test or gauge the leadership qualities of the students as well as their clarity of thinking. Also the group discussions offer a common platform to a group of students which may generally be in the tune of eight to ten people or may be more depending on the requirement of the judges and the number of students present.
Thus Group discussions are extremely popular these days and are a must in admissions and placements at colleges and the companies respectively.
